It’s hard to believe, but Nora Roberts is on the verge of publishing her 200th novel when The Witness comes out on April 17, 2012. Nora Roberts’ first book, Irish Thoroughbred, hit shelves in May 1981. Since then, she’s been publishing books at a rate of 6.5 a year. That means it takes her on average less than two months to complete each novel.

Roberts claims she’s able to write so fast due to her rather strict schooling. “I … have a great deal of discipline – a gift from the nuns who educated me for the first nine years of my schooling,” Roberts told in an interview. “Nobody instills the habit of discipline and the shadow of guilt (two essential writer’s tools) like a nun.”

All told, Roberts has more than 400 million copies of her books in print. That means sales of more than 2 million copies per book. Expect The Witness to wind up on a lot of shelves!

Nora Roberts spills beans on her new romance book The Search

Nora Roberts talks about her new book The Search, due out July 6.

Nora Roberts' new romance book The Search is out July 6!Nora Roberts’ new book, The Search, hits shelves on July 6, 2010, and the author has invested a lot of herself in the book. Namely, in the form of dogs.

“As many readers know, I love having dogs in my books – just as I do in my own home,” Roberts writes in her email newsletter, Nora’s News. Indeed, the heroine of her latest effort is a dog trainer who works with search-and-rescue pups (hint: that’s likely where the book’s title, The Search, comes from).

In writing the book, Roberts did some real-world research to figure out what it’s like being a search-and-rescue dog trainer. “I’m very well acquainted with the unrestrained exuberance and loyalty of beloved dogs, but writing THE SEARCH gave me a chance to explore how the discipline and hard work of the partnership between search-and-rescue dogs and their humans help save lives every day,” she writes.

Roberts will be busy promoting the book starting next week (from book signings to conferences), and after that, she says she’ll go on deserved vacation. She just won’t say that vacation will be.

“As soon as the conference ends, the family is getting together for what I think will be a truly magical vacation to a place I’ve wanted to visit since I first read Mary Stewart,” Roberts writes. “No other hints now, but if you check out my Facebook page after the start of August, we will have links to my travelogue of the trip as posted on ADWOFF.” Hmm… Mary Stewart … we’re guessing Scotland!

The Search starts off with a bang. Here’s the first sentence: “On a chilly morning in February with a misty rain shuttering the windows, Devin and Rosie Cauldwell made slow, sleepy love.” Read an excerpt of The Search here, then preorder The Search on Amazon!
